A new shared vision and a desire to be more involved in the La Trobe community saw Luqman (Luke) Latif elected as President of the La Trobe University Affiliated Tennis Club in November 2015. Since then he has aimed high, creating a structured and enthusiastic tennis club, alongside Vice President Tom Henskens.
From a young age Luke loved and played competitive basketball. At 17 he was injured during gameplay and doctor’s orders ruled him out of playing contact sports in the future.
As a first year student in 2014, Luke decided to give everything a go. It was during this time that he joined the club and played tennis for the first time. After taking an executive position in 2015, Luke saw the abundance of resources available to the club and decided he wanted to play a bigger role in shaping the sporting experiences of his teammates.
With the help of those who shared his vision, local businesses and cafes from the university campus and other La Trobe affiliated sports teams, the tennis club was able to start the year swinging. By week seven of 2016, the club had grown to include 68 active members, up from just 35 last year.
Luke’s vision for the team incorporates training, game time and team bonding. Three competition nights are spread across the week, with varying time slots in order to cater to the entire club’s needs. On Monday mornings the team are able to participate in a relaxed hit and on Wednesday afternoons the team take part in two coaching sessions, as well as participating in team BBQs and outings.
Luke said that the hard work and dedication he puts into leading his club, is completely worth it. ‘I looked back at the bench during a game and saw everyone laughing and talking and I really appreciated that.’
Last week the Club announced its team for the University Games. The team of eleven will begin training later this month, with Latif hoping to organise practice matches against rival universities in the lead up to the games.
