La Trobe International students at the Rebels Vs Reds Rugby game

On Saturday 13 May a group of our International students were hosted by La Trobe’s sports partner, Melbourne’s Rebels Rugby Union Club, at a game against the Queensland Reds. The opportunity served to introduce and expose international students to the many wonderful sporting events and venues on offer in Melbourne, and provide them with a welcome social break from their rigorous study and exam preparation along with some of their fellow students. The game, held at the iconic AAMI Park stadium, was also attended by VC Kelly Smith, and several of our colleagues from the Confucius Institute.

ISS Community Engagement Coordinator, Anna Jenkins, and the group of around 25 La Trobe students were very excited and a little overwhelmed, to participate in the guard of honour as the teams ran on the ground, amidst fireworks, Japanese drumming, and the colossal and imposing Rebels ruby players, before watching the rest of the game from their safe vantage point in the stadium grounds. It was certainly a new and exciting experience for many of the students who had never attended a rugby game before, and were thrilled to be involved in some of the ‘behind the scenes’ preparation for an event of this magnitude.
