A very warm welcome to you from La Trobe University!
Studying overseas is a life-changing experience. We have listed some tips to help you prepare for this new and exciting time.
Finalise your accommodation
Accommodation Services at La Trobe offers a wide range of on-campus accommodation options for students and support in finding off-campus accommodation options. If you are staying in temporary accommodation and need advice on finding permanent housing, visit Accommodations Services.
Apply for Tax File Number (TFN)
If you are planning to work and you should also pass it onto your bank. You don’t have to have a TFN, but without one, you pay more tax. You can lodge the application with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) online on the ATO website.
If you have opened a bank account before arriving, remember to go to your nominated branch and provide your identification so that you can access your account. If not, you can open an account at one of the banks or the credit union on campus, or a branch near your permanent accommodation.
Order your Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) card
It is a condition of your student visa that you have a valid Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of your student visa. Please note: if you are here on a visa other than student visa, you are not eligible for OSHC and need to arrange your own health insurance. If you have organized OSHC through La Trobe University, your OSHC policy will be covered by Allianz Global Assistance. Explore their website for more information on how to find a doctor and make a claim.
